Issue:
IMAP mail no longer receiving and/or sending mail afterward iOS 4.x.x or iOS 5.x upgrade to iOS 6.0.

Solutions:

Error:
"The user name or password for xxxx.mindwatering.net is incorrect" (incorrect password).
For iPad and iPhones at Mindwatering, upgrading from iOS4 on iPhone and iOS5.x on iPad with backups and restores on Mac versions of iTunes, the issue we saw was that the receiving (Mail Server) and sending (Outgoing SMTP) server entry passwords were not entered. We fixed the issue by re-entering both passwords.

Error:
"Cannot Get Mail. The mail server xxxxx.mindwatering.net is not responding. Verify that you have entered the correct account info in Mail settings."
This error indicates that the server is not available. However, since various other mobile, PC, and Mac clients are receiving and sending to the same server, it's not a server-side issue.

Things to check:
1. SSL off, enable, or if it on and server doesn't have SSL, enable it.
2. Check that you can bring up server in Safari on the mobile device. If okay, then it's not a DNS error. (probably okay)
3. Verify the username, password, and server name in both the receiving and sending server entries. (probably okay)

If all good, then try removing the mail account from the device and re-add.
The issue was reported in the Yahoo and GMail forums, along with other servers. So it's widespread. The most common fix was to remove the account and re-add it.

The issue seems to be new functionality where iOS supports "Application-Specific Passwords". So far removing the account and re-setting up from scratch has fixed it.
